2001: A Space Odyssey - Jupiter and Beyond
THE scene from 2001..
Perhaps the greatest scene in one of the greatest movies ever made, which has accompanied and taken psychonauts on a voyage like no other for years..
Still and always will be, one of my favourite voyages of all time..
There is a reason they called this film “the ultimate trip” when it was released..This is it.

Shpongle - A New Way to Say Hooray!
This video recently sent me on an incredible trip, it is basically a trip in and of itself, it is so perfectly psychedelic, capturing the freedom and beauty of a trip in every way, as is everything Shpongle, but this fan made video was actually new to me. I’ll be writing about it further but for now, just give it a watch!

The night air was already cool, signalling chilly times ahead, as the gentle breeze blew my hair across my face. “Well, lets get mooooovvvviiinggg then!” I said whilst a shiver ran through my spine.
Five of us were stood on the shoreline, having made a hasty decision to “go fishing” about 9pm that night. I had driven all over town picking everyone up and procuring supplies hurriedly for the evening. The intrepid travellers this night would be my brother C, our friend M, our other friend D, and our uncle B.
4 of us dropped one tab each, whilst M stuck to drinking as he wasn’t up for a psychedelic voyage, but always up for an adventure.
We began our walk along the hidden mangrove covered trail, crossing through shallow streams with the moonlight as our guide. B fashioned a makeshift lamp out of a fishing rod and LED light, and carried it in front of him, fishing his way to what would be our campgrounds on this magical night.
Confusion had already set in for B & D as they were both giggling maniacally through the journey to our camp, stopping every two minutes due to fits of laughter as the absurdity of our misadventures on a Sunday night began to set in.
We arrived at a clearing of trees amidst the mangroves, “this is the spot!” proclaimed my brother excitedly. And quite a spot it was, looking straight out to the glistening water, surrounded by trees amongst the sand, our own private little island oasis.
Gathering the wood for a fire i felt the first tinges of a psychedelic wave washing over me, things were starting to get just a little bit funny, and i felt a huge smile creep across my face. At first i had been hesitant to go on this adventure, but was now glad i was living in the moment, making the most of the rare time i could spend with my brother and this particular group of friends.
B was in charge of the fire, and in no time we had the sweet warmth of natural flames to crowd around. By the time the fire was built, D was starting to lose himself, rolling around in the sand and saying barely comprehensible sentences, all while having the time of his life. He was made for this sort of thing you see, a throwback to the 60s, as we all sort of are, D is the prototype, the first off the rank, a truly natural psychedelic soul if ever there was one.
We left D to his own sand covered devices, as we gathered around the fire each of us seemingly unable to wipe the grin from our faces. It was so good to Be Here, and Now, in this moment. If only it would last forever…
B and my brother somehow got locked in a loop of some sort, each trying to freak the other one out further and further, telling absurd stories and far out tales. Watching my uncle regress into his childhood was a beautiful thing, as is seeing into any persons soul. Often he would have this look of pure wonder and joy, forgetting what he was going to say mid sentence while i could see a childlike innocence in his face, as if the last 40 years or so had no effect at all. It was truly remarkable…
”B’s gone back to TEENAGE B!” exclaimed my brother. He too had noticed this time warp, as my uncle had truly regressed to a younger time. I’d seen it before, but it was still as hilarious as ever and we all got stuck in laughter for a good 10 minutes at this revelation.
As the night grew on, i went for a wander towards the water, admiring the patterning layer of intricate fractals forming with each tiny wave on this calm estuary. I looked up at the stars, one of my favourite things to do, and watched as they glistened and gleamed, stretching and shrinking in my vision to the music playing in my head. I must have got stuck staring straight up for a good ten minutes when i thought perhaps i should just sit where i am and look some more. Then i remembered there were others here, and i should probably rejoin the group.
Back at camp things had gotten quite strange indeed, B was now IN the freezing cold water, wading around muttering something about chasing fish. C had attempted to cast a line out, and had caught a tree before even making it into the water. I laughed to myself at how unsuccessfull we would all be as real fisherman..
As the night wore on the stories and tales grew sillier and sillier, whilst everyone cheek bones were probably hurting from so much laughter.
“Dont Move!” exclaimed my uncle B whilst pointing directly behind me. “Aaaaaaaaagh!!” i screamed like a girl, and quickly turned around, fearing the worst, a snake or some other hideously venemous creature, poised to strike me down! I kept squealing as i turned to face an incredibly, impossibly, scarily…cute, possum! It was about 30cm away from me, staring directly at me with beautiful little glowing eyes and tiny paws.
I was overcome with joy and relief, whilst the group laughed at my initial reaction. It was going to take a long time to live that one down..
The madness continued long into the night, as i watched the mangroves dancing in sync with one another whilst the others were consumed in storytelling. Each story conjuring up beautiful vistas in my head as I would sometimes lay back and close my eyes.
Eventually we had ran out of cigarrettes, and seemingly in a flash, it was almost morning, our supplies had dwindled and the group was beginning to get restless as their trip wore off and tiredness set in.
We packed up to set off, but first we had to wake D who had somehow passed out. Upon waking him we told him we were getting going back to the car. “How we going to get there?” he asked quite seriously. “The same way we got here man!” i said! “Walk!”
“Uuuuuuuuuuuugh!” he groaned.
The walk back was filled with more laughter and joy and a brief surprise for me when i got back to the car. I had thought my night/morning had wound down, but upon leaning on my car i got caught staring at the patterning that was forming over the grassy park near us. Waves of interweaving colour were forming and spinning effortlessly. That was when I knew i really didn’t want to drive…
After dropping everyone off at their respective houses i reflected on a great night, realising a few things that should have already been obvious to me.
Sometimes i have been caught up in my own psychedelic journeys, heading ever inward, deeper and deeper seeing how far the rabbit hole goes. This night however, was not about that, about going as far as i could go or discovering incredible revelations. This night had just been about good times and good friends, something that I’ve come to learn is equally as important…
We never did catch any fish though..

PS:
I in no way condone driving under the influence of anything, specially that. I have done it a handfull of times in my lifetime and don’t really wish to do it again.
